April & May News!

USBCHA2013_RoyNursery1
April and May have been busy months for Dog4Ewe!
At the beginning of May, John traveled with Lee and Roy to the USBCHA National Cattle Dog Finals in Leeton, MO. Unfortunately Lee had a tough cow that kept breaking away on his 2nd preliminary run and did not make the Open finals. Roy earned his way into the Nursery finals and took 4th place! He did a great job working the difficult cattle around the course. Roy has fantastic control for a young dog (and really displayed it during the finals) – he grips when necessary (heads and heels), but if he can quickly stop a cow without gripping, he will leave it at that. The finals had some rough weather (for May) including snow for the first 2 days of competition! Congrats to everyone!

Hope has been bred and should whelp in mid July. See the Dogs for Sale page for more information. Hope has a new video up on her page too! (click HERE for Hope’s page)

Trey has been in training and is now available for sale. Trey is a 2 year old litter mate to Hope and Molly and will make an excellent cattle or sheep/goat dog. Check out the Dogs for Sale page for more about Trey and several videos of him working cattle.

Meg (Molly x Pete) now has her own page. Meg is a great little pup showing some amazing potential at a very young age! More about Meg HERE.

GRAND CHAMPION ROY at NWSS

Roy_GrandChampionIntSheepNWSS2013

John and Natalie made the trip with the DOG4WE Border Collies to Denver, CO on January 25th-27th for the National Western Stock Show. John and Roy celebrated Roy’s 2nd Birthday by winning GRAND CHAMPION in Intermediate Sheep!!!

Roy worked fast and close on the range sheep used for this indoor arena trial. He kept them moving throughout the course and didn’t give them a chance to turn around and lock up. Roy took 4th in the first go around, and took 1st in the second go around to capture the buckle! We’re pretty darn happy with this young dog and can’t wait to see him continue to mature, and see what he will do in open competitions in the future.

The Dog4Ewe Border Collies have been competing at the NWSS for many years. Most recently, in 2010 John and Mick won Open Cattle Grand Champion. In 2011 John and Lee took 4th place in Open Cattle, and in 2012 John and Lee took Reserve Champion in Open Cattle.

Molly x Pete Puppies in the New Year!

Molly has been bred to Tom Forrester’s Pete, and we are expecting the puppies at the end of February! These pups will go to experienced working homes. If you are interested in a puppy from this litter, please contact John at john.dog4ewe@navix.net.

Pete works daily on Tom’s farm and has been very successful on the trial field for many years. Pete was the 2005 Cattle Nationals Nursery Champion, as well being the 2010 Nationals Reserve Open Champion dog. (no other dog has done both)

On the trial field….

At the Hometown Travis Crop Cattledog Trial in Creston, Iowa, Lee won the Open Division and Roy was second in the Nursery!! I was so proud of them both!!
The Dog4Ewe Border Collies also made the trip to the BCSA National Specialty in Wisconsin at the end of October. At the Specialty Molly and Hope had phenominal runs and finished their Started A sheep titles, and Lee had great runs on B course sheep and ducks!

Reserve Champion at NWSS 2012

The DOG4WE Border Collies traveled to Denver, CO January 19th-22nd for the National Western Stock Show. John and Lee took Reserve Grand Champion at the NWSS Open Cattle finals with a smooth and quick run!!! Way to go John and Lee!!!

Roy competed in the Intermediate Sheep trial. While Roy didn’t place, he showed great control on the tough range sheep being used for the arena trial. Not too bad for a 1 year old dog.

The Dog4Ewe Border Collies have been competing at the NWSS for years. Most recently, in 2010 John and Mick won Open Cattle Grand Champion. And in 2011 John and Lee took 4th place in Open Cattle.

About Us

John Holman is from Clay Center, NE where he is employed by the USDA. John Holman began training stockdogs in 1980 when he was hired as sheep herdsman for Mississippi State University. John is known for his DOG4EWE Border Collies, but has had extensive experience with Bearded Collies, Australian Cattle Dogs, Bouviers, Shelties, Corgis, Puliks and Belgians. He is also a licensed AKC, AHBA and USBCHA judge.

In recent open competitions John has had wins at the Iowa State Fair, Nebraska State Fair and the National Western Stock Show. In 2003 John placed 8th and 10th with his dogs Moo and Trim at the USBCHA cattle finals. In 2005 John and Mick won the second go-around with a perfect score of 90, and in 2010 John and Lee were 4th in the Nursery class!. In AKC competition, John has won over 65 HITs and RHITs with his dogs. He has also campaigned dogs to 7 Open and 4 Pro-Novice High Point Dog of the Year awards with the Nebraska Stock Dog Association.

DOG4EWE Border Collies are the product of 25 years of work and 5 generations of selective breeding. They have enough power for tough cattle and are very biddable at the same time. DOG4EWE Border Collies are used successfully as ranch, trial, agility and obedience dogs all over the US and Canada. John is very grateful to all those that have helped him over the years. He couldn’t have been this successful without the support of his family and friends in the stockdog community!
